Our day in Helsinki. This is one of the biggest ship building ports. They have 5 big harbors where some of the top ice breakers are made. 66% of the country is made up of forest. An average apartment if 70 Square Meters. The company Nokia, was started here in 1893 for with paper & pulp, then tires and rubber shoes, then Cable. In 1974 they did electronics. The Nokia company’s headquarters are located here. Taxes here are 33% of which 1 % goes to the state churches. The Baltic Sea does completely Freeze over. It only contains 0.2% salt. Also, when it does freeze, it can get as thick as 16 centimeters (2 ft) thick in front of Helsinki. June-Aug is the summer but still very cold. White nights are End of May to End of July. Finland was a part of Sweden from 1155-1809. In 1809 Sweden and Russia were at war and Finland came under a Russian Tsar Alexander the 1st. In 1917 Finland declared their independence. They have over 30 National Parks and 187,000 lakes. Crops are Wheat, Rye, Malt and Barley.
Mom and Dad went on a tour of the city which they enjoyed. I did an architectural tour and the city highlights. There are some interesting sights. We had little time for shopping. Not much really new here. Weather was cold and rainy again. We pulled out of port at 4:45 pm and the sun finally came out. Wouldn’t you know it.
Anyway.. we are on our way to Stockholm now. We should arrive tomorrow morning.
